30 years

Lincad, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

The company was founded in 1986 by Brian Soden, now Lincad’s Chairman, who identified an opportunity to offer the UK MOD both a high quality battery service and better value for money. Initially, much of Lincad’s work involved servicing the nickel-cadmium batteries that powered the Clansman radio used by the British forces from the late 1970s to the mid-2000s.

Having demonstrated its capabilities in this way, Lincad was then awarded the production contract for the battery in 1995, establishing the company as a manufacturing business for the first time.

Over the course of its 30 years, Lincad has been instrumental in advancing battery technology and design, working closely with global cell manufacturers to push the limits of what can be achieved with the latest cell chemistries. The commercialisation of lithium-ion batteries in 1991 saw a step change in battery performance and by the year 2000, Lincad was developing its first lithium-ion power system (LIPS) battery, the LIPS 1, and the associated Caravel charger.

Since then, Lincad’s ever expanding range of batteries and power management systems have been deployed for applications ranging from man-portable equipment to artillery systems. This year will see the introduction of the next generation LIPS 15 battery, offering the very latest in battery technology and design.

Occupying an 11,000 sq. ft. facility in Surrey where all its design and manufacturing activities take place, Lincad can boast a core team of highly skilled engineers, quality testing, production and management staff who work closely with customers to produce lighter, more powerful batteries with faster, more flexible charging solutions. Whilst the majority of the company’s work continues to be for the MOD and large defence Prime Contractors, Lincad is also able to offer a bespoke service for any company that has a specific power requirement.

Recognised as an MOD Prime Contractor, Lincad has also recently been awarded TickITplus accreditation and is a member of the Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register (JOSCAR).

Brian Soden commented: “Whilst our 30th anniversary is certainly a time to celebrate 30 years of achievement, both commercially and technologically, it is also a time to look forward to the future. The outstanding expertise of our people and the exciting developments that are taking place in cell chemistry place us in a prime position to remain at the forefront of battery technology and design for the next 30 years and beyond.

On Wed 15th June, Lincad will be holding a champagne reception at Eurosatory, the international defence and security exhibition in Paris, to celebrate the company’s 30th anniversary.
